Massage Therapy & It’s Positive Attributes

January 6, 2023

Kim Missick, Massage Therapist & Aesthetian

Covid-19 has changed how we interact with each other on a daily. Spa Resorts and Day Spas on the island, have made changes to incorporate safety guidelines for themselves and their clients.  It is mandatory for tourists visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands, to present a negative Covid test upon arrival.  Sanitizing protocols: hand sanitizers are placed near the entries of all establishments. When necessary, clients are asked to shower before services. The regular questionnaires now includes a covid symptom check list.

Nevertheless, prior to the pandemic, it had always been a custom practise for therapist to wash their hands before and after treatments, sanitizing tools and utensils, using clean linen for each guest and sanitising rooms and massage tables, in between treatments.  So not much has changed, having been a norm. Therefore, you can relax in a clean safe and comfortable environment to enjoy your Spa services.

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is the hands-on manipulation of muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues. Movements such as effleurage, petrissage, kneading, hacking, pounding and knuckling are used to bring about a feeling of relaxation and well-being. Massage techniques can range from light stroking to deep pressure.

Massage therapy history dates back thousands of years to ancient cultures. These therapies were used as an alternative from of medicine to help heal ailments and injuries. First documented in China around 2700 BC massage therapy has evolved and the demand for it is high.

What are the types of massages?

Massages can be divided into two major categories; they are as follows.

Therapeutic Massage: Medically trained professionals carry out therapeutic massages or physical therapy. These massages are offered in hospitals, clinics or even by your chiropractor. They aid in the rehabilitation of patients who have undergone surgeries or recovering from injuries. They help improve strength, mobility and overall fitness. Common types of therapeutic massages are Deep Tissue and Sports Massage.

Relaxing Massages: These are offered by Licenced Massage Therapist and can be done at day spas, beach cabanas, and resort spas or in the comfort of your home via mobile spa. The most common type of relaxing massage is the Swedish Massage.

The benefits of Massages:

Therapeutic massages aids in the rehabilitation of patients and athletes. It helps to relieve postoperative pain, muscular aches and pains such as arthritis and rheumatism, treats strains and sprains, improves mobility and helps with back or spinal alignment.

Relaxing massages helps to relieve everyday stress and tension, relaxes both body and mind, relieves headaches, helps with depression and anxiety, improves circulation, releases toxins and brings about a feeling of wellbeing.

Who can get a massage?

Anyone can get a massage. Even babies can enjoy the benefits of massage to help them sleep better and be less colicky. Kids and teen have very stressful lives from balancing schoolwork, peer pressure, social life, sports and parents. A relaxing Swedish massage can help alleviate the day-to-day stress and tension to help keep them focused. Pregnant women tend to enjoy the pre-natal massages to help with swollen feet and lower back pains. Both male and female clients including the elderly enjoy massages on special occasions, monthly treats or postoperative.

Having a massage while on budget

Over the years the prices of massages have risen considerably. Local day spas tend to be slightly cheaper because they might not carry all the complimentary amenities as a high end or five-star resort spa, but this does not compromise the quality of the spa services delivered.

The spa is a multimillion-dollar industry and there is no limit on how much clients are willing to spend on spa services and spa at home products. Which leads to the question, “How can one afford massages while on a budget?” During the festive season lots of spa run specials on services to attract new customers and beef up revenue. During special holidays, most spas might have huge discounts on gift certificates or add something complimentary. This is the time many clients tend to stock up on gift certificates that be redeemed later. Clients can also enjoy a shorter treatment that works or focuses only on the problem area or areas.
